This summer Barrie Kosky will stage Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers at the 2019 Salzburger Festspiele, the sixth new production for the director in this season alone, which has also included Bernstein Candide, Puccini La Boheme and Moritz Eggert M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder based on Fritz Lang’s famous crime film of 1931, all for Komische Oper Berlin. Elsewhere new stagings included Franz Schreker Die Gezeichneten for Opernhaus Zürich, Rameau Les Boréades for Opéra de Dijon, and Handel Agrippina at the Bayerisches Staatsorchester as part of the 2019 Munich Opera Festival.

Barrie’s productions have also been staged this season at Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Carmen and Agrippina), The Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen (Carmen), Nationaltheater Mannheim and Opéra national du Rhin (Pelléas et Mélisande) as well as his ground-breaking production of Die Zauberflöte (co-directed with 1927) at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and at the Adelaide and Perth Festival, which is nominated in the 2019 Helpmann awards for Best Opera and Best Direction.  Barrie also makes a return to the Edinburgh International Festival this year with the Komische Oper Berlin, for his production of Eugene Onegin.
