Gavan read Education and Music at St Patrick’s College, Dublin and, after post-graduate studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, trained at the National Opera Studio in London as a baritone. He was a Jerwood Young Artist at the 2012 Glyndebourne Festival Opera, second prize winner at the 2013 Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition and won the Southbank Sinfonia Peter Hulsen Orchestral Song Award before his transition to a tenor in the 2019/20 season, supported by Opera North singing tenor in their Viennese New Year concerts as well as covering the roles of Prologue and Quint The Turn of the Screw and Sam Kaplan Street Scene.

In the following season he made his debut at La Monnaie, Brussels in concert as Don Gasparo in Donizetti La Favorita and in the 2021/22 season sang Jacquino Fidelio for Glyndebourne on Tour; Peter Maxwell Davies The Lighthouse for Irish National Opera and Ferrando Cosí fan tutte for Garsington Opera. Last season included Gastone La traviata for Opera North; Messiah in Monte Carlo; a New Year’s Day concert with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra; a return to La Monnaie to sing Cecil Bastarda in a major new production based on the Donizetti trilogy as well as a return to the Glyndebourne Festival for the first time as a tenor singing the First Commissioner and covering the Chevalier de la Force in Poulenc Dialogues des Carmélites. Further ahead he makes his debut at English National Opera singing First Armed Man in The Magic Flute; sings Evangelist in the St Matthew Passion with the National Symphony Orchestra; a new commission by Stephen McNeff entitled The Celestial Stranger for tenor and orchestra with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and he returns to La Monnaie to sing Gustav Adolph Ekdahl in Fanny and Alexander by Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson – a new adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name.

Other recent tenor appearances in his native Ireland have included White King in Barry Alice’s Adventures Under Ground for Irish National Opera; Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance at Cork Opera House as well as performances for them of La bohème, Così fan tutte and La traviata; Juan in Massenet Don Quichotte and Azim in Stanford The Veiled Prophet for Wexford Festival Opera; and a number of appearances on RTÉ Radio singing repertoire including arias from Eugene Onegin (Lensky), La traviata (Alfredo), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Belmonte) and Macbeth (Macduff).
